Brokaw FFA members stay active with summer activities
7/10/2008 1:49:32 PM

Brokaw FFA members of Clarinda have continued to stay active with activities throughout the summer. In early June, FFA members helped with the Page County Relay for Life event in Clarinda by hosting a petting zoo with farm animals that young kids could enjoy. Bringing in animals from their own farms were Kam Hartstack, Caleb Crabs, Christy Williamson, Jenna Holt, and JJ Sunderman.

One Brokaw member attended the Iowa Agricultural Youth Institute in Ames the week of June 9. Talynn Hughes was a delegate during this four day conference, in which participants had a chance to broaden their leadership skills, listen to speakers, and tour the State Capitol Building.

On Friday, June 13, five Brokaw FFA chapter officers attended the District Leadership Camp for Chapter Officers at Audubon High School. This camp is designed to develop leadership skills and teamwork skills that FFA officers can then utilize in their own chapters.

The program consisted of workshops, fun games, and lunch. The workshops focused on developing communication skills, recruiting and retaining FFA members, and operating procedures for your FFA chapter. Members of the 2007-2008 Southwest District Officer team as well as State FFA Officers presented the program. The 2008-2009 Brokaw FFA Chapter Officer team that attended consisted of Laura Beaver, Jill McCall, Amanda McNees, Dustin Sump, and Kam Hartstack.

During the week of June 16-23, two Brokaw members attended Washington, D.C. as a part of the Washington Leadership Conference. JJ Sunderman and Kam Hartstack represented the Brokaw Chapter from Clarinda with 96 other FFA members from the state of Iowa. While at the conference, members attended many leadership workshops, visited national and historic sites of our nation's capital, and participated in a service learning project.

On Thursday, June 26, FFA members helped Page County Extension with their Farm Safety Day by serving as group leaders for the kids as well as presenting a Farm Safety workshop as part of a Community Safety Net program. Kids received information on the hazards of farm equipment and machinery and learned about different safety topics.

Those FFA members presenting the program were Nevada Turner, Amanda McNees, Laura Beaver, and JJ Sunderman.

Those helping as group leaders were Talynn Hughes, Christy Williamson, Cassie McNees, Emma Sunderman, and Bailie Walters.
