The Superior FFA Chapter coordinated a cancer awareness day at Superior High School Jan. 9. The membership’s emphasis was on breast cancer awareness.
The FFA invited doctors from the Superior Family Medical Center to speak at two senior high assemblies in the morning. Jason Hass, PA-C, spoke to the men regarding testicular and prostate cancer. Julie Theis, MD, and Teresa Frahm, APRN, addressed the ladies on ovarian and breast cancer. Materials from the American Cancer Society were made available.
Jacquelynn Wilt prepared a 4’ x 8’ plywood sign with a painted pink ribbon to highlight the event.
During the Superior vs. Thayer County basketball games, the Superior FFA hosted a community pie baking contest. Thirty-seven homemade pies were entered in four categories. Judging the pies were Mr. Bruce Tinkham of AgRex, Mr. Scott Boyles of Farmers & Merchants Bank, Mrs. Camie Kroeger of Mainstreet Floral, Mr. Bob Trapp of Superior Ace Hardware and Mrs. Jan Diehl of the Superior City Office.
After the judging, the pies were offered for sale with the funds generated going to the American Cancer Society.
Winning first place in the single crust fruit division was the Fresh Strawberry Cream Cheese pie made by Haley gebers and Sherry Gebers. In the singe crust crème pie category, Cindy Thorton’s Raisin and Pecan pie was the champion.
The double crust fruit pie champion was entered by Patty Studer. She baked a Blueberry pie. In the single crust meringue pie division, the Coconut Crème entry from Rosemary Hasemeyer earned first place. The champion pies were then auctioned off at halftime. The guest auctioneer was Mrs. Lynette Bartley.
Adults helping coordinate the cancer awareness event was Linda Kirchoff, Karen Tinkham, Sue Guilkey, Rhonda Edwards, Ron Rempe, Shelley Utecht, Arlene Rempe and Margaret Brittenham. The chapter extends a special thank you to all the individuals who donated pies. The members appreciate KRFS Radio and the Superior Express for publicizing the event.
