Ag Education students compete in natural resources contest
Twenty Superior High School students enrolled in agriculture education classes competed in the Central Area Envirothon Contest in Grand Island on Monday. The competition was hosted by the Central Platte Natural Resources District at the Central Community College campus.
The top team earned the right to compete in the State Envirothon Contest at Ponca State Park in May. The state winner will compete in North Carolina this summer. Teams could also earn wildcard berths based on their score compared to other districts.
The Envirothon contest has seven areas. Teams of five students work together to solve problems, identify materials and answer test questions. The areas are soils, aquatics, range, forestry, policy, special topics and wildlife. The 2009 special topic was on biodiversity and its impact on natural resources.
The Superior team of Zach Dressman, Tyler Strobl, Andrew Brittenham, Bethany Brittenham and Victoria Simonsen won the Area Championship and the automatic berth at state. This team also won the individual areas of Forestry, Policy, Aquatics, Wildlife, and Range.
The Superior team of Kyle Schultz, Nick Rempe, Rebecca Genung, Montana Hayes and Nick Hawley finished in second place and will have to wait to see if they get a wildcard invitation.
This team tied the Superior I team for first place in Policy and Forestry and won the Soils section. Superior also had the third place team. Members of this team were Rhys Williams, Ross Porter, Ethan Ross, Trevor Hoins and Justin Petsch.
The Superior team of Matt Shafer, Mike Sheets, Korrie Heller, Kenny Meyer and Melissa Guilkey finished in fifth place followed by teams from St. Paul, Ansley, Greeley/Wolbach, Sargent, Loup County and Loup City.
