JC_LS132 Jefferson City, MO Wed Jan 07, 2009 MO Dept of Ag/USDA Market News Boonville-Farmers Livestock Auction Cattle Auction Report for 01/06/2009 Receipts: 1014 Week Ago: 801 Year Ago: 2379 Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold 3.00 to 8.00 higher, with spots of 9.00 higher on cattle weighing 600-700 lbs. Slaughter cows 3.00 to 4.00 lower. The new year has brought some optimism to the feeder market with cattle futures and feedlot trade both looking better than a month ago. Encouraging signs have been hard to come by the past several weeks and most cattlemen were more than happy to tuck 2008 into the history books. A year of record highs and extreme lows left producers wondering what would happen next . If the mood at the local barn this week is any indication, ?cautiously optimistic? would be a good description for the start for 2009. Several new faces were in the crowd this week, some doing a little buying or selling and others just watching, perhaps curious to see what this market would do after the past few weeks of holiday shortened trade. With buyers remaining aggressive throughout the afternoon most classes and weights of cattle sold in narrow price spreads. This week?s supply consisted of mostly small and midsized pkgs and lots weighing over 550 lbs. Supply moderate, demand good. Cows and bulls accounted for near 20 percent of the total offering. The feeder supply consisted of 54 percent steers and bulls and 46 percent heifers; 56 percent of all the feeders weighed over 600 lbs.
